India BioImaging (IBI) was initiated in 2012 with a vision to democratize access to cutting-edge microscopy technologies and harmonize training opportunities across India. While significant success in improving the training quality in imaging facilities was achieved, limited progress was made toward providing access to high-end imaging technologies. Today, we are committed to revitalizing the IBI community by uniting bioimaging stakeholders nationwide. Our objective is to elevate the standards and capabilities of Indian research by promoting the exchange of microscopy knowledge, encouraging research innovation, and sharing resources and expertise in the field.

The Growing IBI Network

The IBI network is rapidly expanding, now encompassing 11 leading imaging cores from a diverse range of private and government research institutions across India. These include both basic and applied research institutes, as well as clinical research centers. Notable members of the network include the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Pune (IISER Pune), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Mumbai, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH), Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, Ashoka University, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence (SNIoE), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, with more institutions expected to join soon.

IBI offers researchers over 25 imaging technologies and image data analysis services, making state-of-the-art resources accessible to the broader scientific community. The current focus of IBI is on fostering stronger collaboration within the bioimaging community, both in India and globally. However, securing sustained funding from national agencies and effective advocacy remains a significant challenge in maintaining and expanding these critical efforts.
